Polycarbonate resin Panlite® for Water-Repellent

Teijin's water-repellent polycarbonate resin maintains the inherent transparency of polycarbonate while retaining its water- repellent and stain-resistant properties for a long period of time.

Introduction

Water-repellent materials are gaining attention as environmentally friendly options because their properties are inherent to the materials themselves. These materials can maintain their characteristics over a long period without requiring additional treatments. On the other hand, imparting water repellency through coatings or surface treatments can diminish over time, necessitating regular reprocessing. This not only highlights the advantages of water-repellent materials in terms of environmental impact but also in terms of maintenance costs. These properties are particularly valuable in applications exposed to harsh environments, such as outdoor building materials and automotive interiors and exteriors. In the field of communications, water repellency is also essential for protecting communication equipment, preventing signal attenuation and corrosion caused by rainwater, thereby maintaining reliable communication.

Features

Panlite® W-0212(under development)is a water-repellent polycarbonate developed by Teijin, and has the following.

  • Achieves excellent water repellency while maintaining the transparency of General-purpose polycarbonate.
  • Compared to water-repellent materials with surface treatments, it exhibits a stable sliding angle over a long period of time, making it possible to maintain water repellency and anti-fouling properties.
    • Evaluation of Sliding angle*

*When a droplet is placed on a horizontal surface and the surface is gradually tilted, the droplet will start to slide at a certain angle.
This angle is known as the “sliding angle”. A smaller sliding angle indicates that the droplet adheres less to the surface, meaning
the surface has better water-repellent properties.
